Climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources require new technologies for the efficient use of raw materials and energy. Therefore, the research and development of integrative plastic technologies for the efficient production of lightweight structures and systems is the focus of application-oriented scientific work at the Institute of Lightweight Structures (IST) of the Chemnitz University of Technology.
The starting point is both specifically modified high-performance polymers and compounds from renewable raw materials as well as novel thermoplastic prepregs and bionic textile semi-finished products. Our industry-spanning cutting-edge research merges various thermoplastic and thermoset-based manufacturing processes with currently still separate processes to form new technologies with integrated process chains. Complex components with high power density and functional integration can thus be produced in an energy-efficient manner. Our coupled component and process simulations using analytical and numerical methods provide crucial information for the optimal adjustment of structural parameters and process windows.
With the IST, Chemnitz Technical University is one of the best and largest research institutions in the field of lightweight construction in Germany. As initiator and part of numerous international research alliances and networks, we stand for the successful transfer of knowledge between research and industry.
