The use of and demand for lightweight components for automotive applications is increasing continually. In addition to the well-known advantages of composite materials – low weight, high strength, outstanding corrosion resistance, and complex design freedom – the fire protection properties of composite components is particularly important for use in battery housings.
In contrast to standard automotive composite applications, there is the potential risk of fire from battery components, and dangerous gas pressure can build up as a result. SAERTEX addressed this challenge with its new fire-retardant non-crimp fabrics based on the SAERTEX LEO product series. In cases of thermal runaway, the LEO coated fabric significantly improved the reaction-to-fire and resistance-to-fire properties of the battery housing regardless of the resin system or production process.
