Epox SMC - Potentials for semi-structural series

For many years now, Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) technology is used for non-load bearing or semi-structural applications in automotive industry. The fast, cost-efficient and robust manufacturing process enables a generous geometrical design freedom and the possibilities for functional integration. Today, mainly glassfiber reinforced polyester or vinyl ester formulations are used, although they are limited due to their mechanical performance. Epoxy resin-based Sheet Molding Compounds extend the range of applications for SMC technology to include cost-effective, high-performance applications in the automotive sector. With the VESTALITE® S product group, Evonik has developed an important component for this area. The amine-based curing agent VESTALITE® S can be combined with standard liquid epoxy resins and offers cost efficient processing by best in class mechanical properties for styrene free, high performance EP SMC materials. As with all epoxies, VESTALITE® S based formulations have no styrene emissions and extremely low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions in components.
In collaboration with Evoniks Joint Venture Vestaro and its partner Forward Engineering, the potential of VESTALITE® S based SMC materials was demonstrated in a relevant automotive part application.
