In the fast lane with lightweight construction: prominent support for the Lightweight Technologies Forum 2017

The lighter something is, the faster it goes: nowhere is this saying truer than in professional racing. Be it engine or muscle-powered vehicles – hybrid lightweight construction plays an increasingly important role not only in industry but also in many sports. No wonder lightweight construction is now also receiving direct support from sportspeople. Motorsports racer Fabian Schiller and extreme cyclist Pierre Bischoff are perfect examples of this at the Lightweight Technologies Forum (LTF). In addition to this, the combined exhibition and lecture forum held as part of COMPOSITES EUROPE in Stuttgart from 19 to 21 September will be supported by this year’s patron: the German Ministry of Economy and Energy (BMWi).
Faster to the finish line
In professional cycling every kilo counts – at times even grams, too. Pierre Bischoff is a professional, long-distance road and mountain-bike racing cyclist. The longer the distance, the more decisive the weight. “In sports lightweight construction is decisive,” he says and explains: “But this is not everything: in cycling sports what counts is high rigidity in the drive train, low mass at the wheel and aerodynamics. Lightweight and stiff cycles make acceleration so much easier. At first, you might think it’s just a few grams but they quickly add up!” The physical properties of the various assemblies are key for bicycles, he explains. “With composites these lightweight assemblies can easily be realised. In ultra-cycling sports this is all the more important because at times we compete over several days. Then every gram counts – you can feel it physically,” Bischoff adds.
At the Lightweight Technologies Forum he will cover the lightweight construction theme in cycling sports with illustrative examples. A brand ambassador of the innovative ultra-lightweight construction technology "xFK in 3D", he will present a carbon bottle holder, a saddle bell and a carbon chain ring. All of these parts were manufactured using the “xFK in 3D” process. Compared to conventionally manufactured products these weigh up to 76 gram less. “Lightweight construction is so important because every kilogram less saves four Watt of energy. This is a whole lot of energy.” Those wanting to find out more about lightweight construction in cycling should not miss the keynote “LTF Ambassador Sports – Bicycle Racing” on 19 September.
Another exciting contribution will be “LTF Ambassador Automotive – Car Racing” by Fabian Schiller on 20 September at the Lightweight Technologies Forum. Currently contracted as a GT3 driver by the HTP Motorsport Team, he will speak about the importance of lightweight construction in motor sports. This topic already plays a pivotal role in this sector, especially against the backdrop of environmental and climate protection, saving resources and sustainability – also with a view to mass-produced vehicles. “Especially in car racing the regulations governing vehicles are very strict. Weight, load-bearing capacity and durability are decisive factors for success on the race track. I am therefore delighted to share my personal experiences gained with the operational excellence of this industry at the Lightweight Technologies Forum,” says Fabian Schiller.
The lightweight construction sector is also supported by the German Ministry of Economy and Energy (BMWi), which will act as a patron for the Lightweight Technology Forum. With its “Geschäftsstelle Leichtbau” – a national and international network node that assists enterprises in the implementation of lightweight construction projects -, with the interactive leichtbauatlas.de initiative and the “Forum Leichtbau” roundtable BMWi promotes networking and cooperation among businesses, the science world and authorities.
Acting as “theme partners” of the Lightweight Technology Forum are the leading lightweight construction associations, institutes and clusters including the VDMA AG Hybride Leichtbau Technologien, CFK Valley Stade, AVK, das AZL – Aachener Zentrum für Integrativen Leichtbau (Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Construction) as well as IKV - Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung (Plastics Processing Institute of the Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University) RWTH Aachen. The Forum is also supported by Leichtbau BW GmbH, the North Rhine-Westphalian network Netzwerk kunststoffland NRW as well as Open Hybrid LabFactory e.V. from Wolfsburg. 2017 also saw an important and competent new partner on the market being enlisted with AMC GmbH. As a “Theme Ambassador for Lightweight Construction” AMC’s task is to co-shape and actively promote the strategic and conceptual development of the Lightweight Technology Forum. Together with the organiser of COMPOSITES EUROPE, Reed Exhibitions, AMC is carrying out a market study on the topic of “Lightweight Construction as an Innovation Driver”, the results of which will be presented at the Lightweight Technology Forum.
Participation in the Lightweight Technology Forum is included in the admission ticket for trade fair visitors.
Kicking off the trade fair: 3rd International Composites Congress (ICC)
Kicking off COMPOSITES EUROPE 2017 will be the “3rd International Composites Congress (ICC)” organised by the trade association Composites Germany from 18 – 19 September 2017. Current trends, new applications and technologies as well as a comprehensive overview of market developments in Europe and the rest of the world will be the focal themes at the 3rd ICC. This year’s partner country is Korea, which will be represented by exclusive speakers.
