Lightweight with thermoplastic composites

Continuously progressing technology demands for new mobility solutions are increasingly focused on ecological aspects, electrification and resource efficiency. Since many years, innovative light weight materials are used for lighter and more efficient parts and components. One of the younger - but nevertheless one of the fastest growing - material classes are continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics, also sometimes known as organosheets. Technical textiles made from carbon or glass fibers, fully impregnated and conoslitated with a thermoplastic polymer matrix are distinguished from metallic materials via their often highly anisotropic material properties but also via the processes needed for part production.
Provided the best fitting process, material specific part designs and the right material choice, oganosheets and similar materials are able to combine lightweight material and lightweight construction into parts with high performance and significant weight reductions.
