THE NETWORK FOR HYBRIDE LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN.
Lightweight design is a mission. Lightweight design is striving for realizing functions with the least economically possible weight and thus for generating added-value. It basically all boils down to reducing the weight of components and load-bearing structures, saving energy and raw materials, generating improved property profiles for the benefit of the customer as well as enhancing the sustainability of products throughout their life cycle. At the same time, performance shall be maintained or optimized.
Accordingly, lightweight design is primarily found in accelerated and moving bodies, i.e. vehicles and aircrafts, elevators or robot arms. Industry sectors such as mechanical and plant engineering, the vehicle as well as the aerospace industry have long ago recognized lightweight design as a key technology. Today, many more branches of industry, as for instance medical technology and the construction sector, consider lightweight design one of the most significant technologies of tomorrow.
However, lightweight design is much more than developing and employing alternative, light materials. In industrial application, system efficient, hybrid lightweight design plays an ever more important role. Different materials are combined in a way which leads to the creation of a new product comprising the best overall properties and which allows gaining maximum benefit of its material-specific features.
System efficient, hybrid lightweight design focusses on the overall process while considering technological, economical, ecological and social aspects – from construction, calculation and simulation via material use and the selection of methods and joining techniques to production and the further processing of the components. This makes lightweight design an important cross-sector technology. Therefore, it is crucial to collect all skills of the overall process in order to optimally exploit and connect industry or company-specific knowledge.
The dynamic process with its interacting members thus gives rise to innovative application-oriented lightweight design solutions entailing a significant competitive advantage.
