The wet filament winding technology is the most common process for the manufacturing of rotationally symmetric structures made of continuous fibre composite materials. A variety of filament winding applications is realized in custom made and small batch productions having the character of manual work supported by machines. More automated manufacturing processes for the large-scale production still are rarely, however such can be found in some application areas, for example in production of pressure vessels for both storage and transport of gaseous energy sources. Considering the changing requirements for the future mobility and drive technology, it is anticipated that there is an increasing demand for such energy storage systems. Insofar, automation solutions and productivity increases in the field of filament winding technology gain in importance.
The lecture gives an overview of successfully established, productivity-raising automation solutions of the world market leader Roth Composite Machinery for all aspects of the filament winding process.
Various case studies from the pressure vessel production application are introduced to point out the potentials of these technologies. Their impact on different target figures as well as the effect of the technological extension levels and process alternatives are reviewed and evaluated.
Moreover, analysing the production task in regard to the area of conflict of product, process and automation further productivity-determining interactions are identified and measured.
