The Aachen Center for Integrative Lightweight Production (AZL) of RWTH Aachen University aims at transforming lightweight design in mass production. Strict interdisciplinary collaboration between the material sciences and production technology enables the implementation of high-volume process chains. This is carried out in collaboration with the existing lightweight activities of the RWTH Aachen University, especially with the 8 AZL partner institutes (IKV, IPT, WZL, IKA, ITA, ISF, ILT, SLA).
Due to strong interactions of the sub-processes of a production chain and an increasing demand for multi-material systems, an integrated approach across the entire value chain is needed.
In this regard, adaptive and continuous process chains, handling and automation technology, tool and mold design and construction, process and joining technology for multi-material systems as well as continuous quality and process chains are considered. In cooperation with AZL Aachen GmbH, the AZL relies on the intense cross-sector collaboration with the international industry along the entire value chain, from material manufacturers via processors, machine manufacturers, tier one and tier two through to OEM. In regular workgroups and joint partner projects, this growing international partner network of 80 companies from 21 different countries collaborates in the field of lightweight production. The cooperation comprises joint, pre-competitive research and development, networking and Open Innovation, joint Business Development and Marketing as well as the connection between RWTH talents and the industry. The five established AZL Workgroups address the topics "Hybrid Thermoplastic Composites“, „Advanced Thermoset Production“, „High-Performance SMC“, „Composites in Buildings and Infrastructure“ and „Composite Pipes and Vessels“.
