A Sustainable Flame Retardant Prepreg for Rail Interior Applications
Themes: New Applications
Polyfurfuryl Alcohol (PFA) based pre-impregnated materials were developed to offer a fire retardant solution that is sustainable, safe for the users and fully REACH compliant. PFA is a by-product of food industry, extracted from waste materials. The processing characteristics of PFA resins were tailored to suit the handling requirements of typical hot-melt prepregs. Its properties were optimised for mass transit interiors applications such as the rail industry where very low values of heat release, smoke density and smoke toxicity are required. The heat and flame shielding capabilities of these new materials can also be used in other safety critical applications such as battery enclosures for electric vehicles.
