The presentation will cover the revolutionary Recyclable EpoxiesTM technology developed by Adesso Advanced Materials Wuxi Co. Ltd, which was a JEC Asia 2012 Innovation Award winner in the recycling category.
During the presentation, Dr. Bo Liang will talk about their new recyclable epoxy systems, Recycloset®, which are now fully commercialised, and how their Cleavamine® curing agents can be adapted to suit individual end user and fabricator needs with existing epoxy resins currently used globally. The technology is designed to provide thermoset manufacturers using either liquid or prepreg epoxy resins with a way to produce truly sustainable fibre reinforced recyclable composite components, from which both the resin and the fibres can be recovered and reused.
Recycloset® technology is based on Adesso’s patent-pending Cleavamine® curing agents. Fibre reinforced composite parts manufactured from either liquid or prepeg epoxy resins cured with a matched Cleavamine® curing agent can undergo degradation and be dissolved in an aqueous-organic solvent mixture at specific, but mild conditions, i.e. at atmospheric pressure and 120 – 160 oC; the result is the separation of the fibres from the dissolved epoxy resin matrix. More than 95% of fibres can be recovered, with the recovery process having minimal effect on the properties of either glass or carbon fibres, so allowing them to be recycled as they can be reused for producing short fibre structural reinforcement composites. Additionally, the dissolved epoxy resin degradation products can be used as a modifier in both epoxy moulding compounds and adhesive formulations. A range of standard and bespoke Cleavamine® curing agents has been developed for various types of epoxy resins commonly used today for infusion, pultrusion, filament winding, and prepreg processes, with additional products in the R & D pipeline.
As well as winning the JEC Asia 2012 Innovation Award in Singapore for recycling, Adesso’s new technology is now recognized by many global chemical, composite and automotive companies as an innovative manufacturing solution to thermoset composite ‘end of life’ recycling and the reduction of FRP waste.
